In 2023, Punjabi films received mixed response, while we witnessed history being created with first Punjabi movie “Carry on Jatta 3” crossing 100 crores landmark, other notable highly anticipated movies failed to impress. Interestingly audiences not only showered love for comedy movies but also to highly intense emotional drama. Neeru Bajwa is leading this year with most number of successful movies as she is not only acting but now producing movies as well. In male lead, trend with singer turned actor continues with Gippy leading in most released, followed by Tarsem Jassar and Ammy Virk. Jayy Randhawa is only non singer actor* with Medal movie raging decent reviews.
This list featured movies which are commercial hits and are liked by masses with good boxoffice success, however may not be well appreciated by critics.

First on list is Gippy, Smeep’s franchisee with Carry On Jatta 3. Movie revolving around almost same cast has Smeep’s trademark situational comedy quirks. Movie was well appreciated by even non punjabi audiences and has good boxoffice numbers even outside Punjab circle. With overseas collection movie managed to clock more then 100 crores at boxoffice.
Second on list is Tarsem Jassar’s ambitious and courageous project based on historical saga set in 1739 titled Mastaney. Directed by Sharan Art and Sagar. Film stars Tarsem Jassar, Simi Chahal and Gurpreet Ghuggi in lead. Movie is praised for depicting valors of Punjab’s history, its gripping narrative and stunning visuals.
Third on list is Satinder Sartaj, Neeru Bajwa starrer “Kali Jotta“. One of Neeru Bajwa’s carrier best performance, supported by Wamiqa Gabbi. Watchout for excellent screenplay and soulful songs by Sartaj.
Fourth on list is “Maurh“, based on the life of famous Jeona Maurh, Ammy Virk and Dev Kharoud stars in the lead. While acting of Dev Kharoud has been applauded, Ammy has not garnered much positive reviews. This is yet again one of courageous attempt by Jatinder Mauhar. Watchout for extensive research, real locations and art direction.
Last on our list of most popular punjabi movies for 2023 is Medal, starring Jayy Randhawa and Baani Sandhu. Directed by Maneesh Bhatt. movies revolves around aspiring athlete and his struggle eventually leading to crimes. Watchout for perfomance by Jayy Randhawa and Antagonist Jag Singh.
Other notable mentions which did not make it to top 5 are “Maujaan Hi Maujaan“, Jodi and “Godday Godday Chaa“.
